Adenovirus Vaccine Now Recommended for Military Personnel
Adenoviruses are common and can cause everything from mild to serious respiratory/stomach and bowel problems, and even death. Because adenovirus Type 4 and Type 7 have caused severe outbreaks of respiratory illness among military recruits, a new live, oral vaccine against these adenovirus types was approved by the FDA this year for US military personnel 17 through 50 years old. It is recommended by the U.S. Department of Defense for military recruits entering basic training. If you will be administering adenovirus, we recommend that you click on "Immunizations" on this website and read about adenovirus vaccine. You may also go to "Online Courses" and complete the Project Immune Readiness module on adenovirus, which includes information on screening and precautions before vaccine administration, special instructions for administration of the vaccine, possible adverse reactions to the vaccine, and appropriate management of these reactions.
